Thankfully, Square-Enix thought up another plan: release the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as an HD re-release. The PSP was pretty much dead in the west by 2011, and with the Vita stumbling out of the gate, it seemed almost a certainty that the handheld title would never escape its homeland. Fans have been clamouring for the PSP spin-off, originally called Final Fantasy Agito XIII and conceived as part of Square-Enix’s Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos, ever since it became available for Sony’s PSP in Japan, and for a while it seemed as if it might never come. The game was developed around director Hajime Tabata's original concept for Final Fantasy Type-0 as a mobile game which would give players easy access to a universe within the Fabula Nova Crystallis series and would be influenced by player choice.Nine years after it was unveiled at E3 2006 and four years after it saw a Japanese release, Final Fantasy Type-0 is finally available outside of the Land of the Rising Sun. Players get to create their own personalized Cadet and enter rubrum Magical Academy while some of the main characters from Final Fantasy Type-0 appear in different supporting, non-playable roles. It had a traditional turn-based battle system and featured a social element where talking with certain characters advanced the player's overall ranking in the game.Īs stated, the game acted as a companion to Final Fantasy Type-0 since it was set in the world of Orience and had a time of war between four nations. The game was free to download but then users would have to purchase additional 'episodes' to progress furtyher into the game. The game's story is set in the universe of Final Fantasy Type-0, and is an entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis Compilation. Square Enix announced that a new version of the game would replace it by the name of Final Fantasy Type-0 Online, slated for a release sometime in 2016 in Japan and eventually North America. Although Square Enix made promises of an eventual North America/Western release, the game was shut down in November, 2015 due to negative receptions and developers of the game could not go on with the current state of the game. The title came from Type-0's earlier title Final Fantasy Agito XIII. Final Fantasy Agito was a short-lived spin-off of Final Fantasy Type-0 that was available on Android and Apple iOS in Japan only (released on May 14, 2014).
